Egg Films’ Slim directed Jungle, bidorbuy’s first ever television advert. Conceptualized by Volcano’s creative director Francois Boshoff, art director Charlene Ihmig and copywriter Jayde O’Brien, the spot plays on the way shopping centres bring out people’s most primal natures, as illustrated by a couple on a routine trip to the mall who are literally surrounded by animals. “It’s a jungle out there,” warns the tagline. “Rather shop online.”

While Bel Air shopping centre allowed Egg to film real hyenas and vultures on their property, they drew the line at the rest of the cast.

CFX created the gorillas, hippos, and vervet monkeys as animatronics, while DOP Werner Maritz filmed the herds of elephants, pelicans and ostriches on location at Brooker’s Farm.

“We also built a temporary studio there,” says Egg producer Nicci Cox. “Art director John Nankin painstakingly worked out the shopping centre floor plan to rebuild it at Brookers. It had to be shot in sections as the area we had was not as big as the area in the centre.”

Bruno Bossi directed Innovation for People, the new TVC for Sasol by TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris’ Damon Stapleton, Mike Groenewald, Joanne Morrison and Antoinette Fourie. The ad moves through four outdoor sets in a single, seamless shot as it demonstrates that the importance of innovation lies not in the idea itself but in what you do with it.

Shooting over two nights at !KhwaTtu along the West Coast, DOP Peter Tischhauser had the biggest challenge, as he had to capture the entire commercial in one take. The cinematographer’s job was further complicated by the fact that Bruno wanted to shoot at sunrise, so Peter only had two 10-15 minute window periods to work his magic.

Everything was done in camera, apart from the fire-fighting plane flying overhead and the water it dropped. BlackGinger added both elements in post. Art director John Nankin and new set-building company Hammerhead teamed up to design and build the four sets in under two weeks.

Richard Starkey edited the job at Priest and was on set to help with the timings.
